If the Gülen Movement is not oppositional, how can it be effective as a social movement?

The Gülen Movement has systematically shunned contentious, political or direct action, preferring to remain, in principle and practice, non-adversarial. Instead, in order to consolidate and revitalize democratic processes, participants have exerted themselves in constructive efforts to draw contending individuals and groups to collaborate in a common spirit of service. A prominent example of these efforts is their establishment in Turkey of the Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) and the Abant Platforms, a series of think tanks which successfully bring together academics, scholars, statesmen, and journalists who hold different, even conflicting, worldviews.
